How Mama Chameleon was founded
After nearly two years of experimentation and honing her technique, Mama Chameleon emerged. In August 2023, Mama Chameleon was unveiled to the world, offering a collection of handcrafted rugs that intertwine the magic of imagination with the vibrancy of colors. The label was founded by artist Charlotte van Winden (The Netherlands, 1987).
Her first rug depicted a chameleon carrying its baby on the head—a reflection of universal motherhood that resonated deeply. The chameleon emerged as a profound symbol, its transformative skin offering an apt analogy for the exploration of color. The chameleon's ever-shifting colors, each hue interwoven with others, became a dynamic source of inspiration.
Threads as a Palette
Initially envisioning soft tapestry wall pieces, her encounter with the sumptuous softness of her creations led her down a new path. Captivated by the tactile allure of her work, she made the decision to craft applied art pieces that could be experienced on the floor, offering a tangible connection to art in everyday life.
Becoming a parent is a transformative experience, altering one's view of the world in profound ways. For Charlotte, this newfound perspective extended beyond the realm of parenthood, inspiring her to see the world anew, as if through the unfiltered lens of a child. Mama Chameleon was born from this transformative outlook, a label that captures the essence of unadulterated wonder.
A revelation soon followed: threads could be wielded as a painter's brush, crafting intricate landscapes of color. The interplay of hues, the discovery of new palettes formed by juxtaposing different shades of wool, became a driving force.
From Chameleons to Earthworms and Beyond
Drawings of earthworms became canvases for color experimentation, maps and rocks metamorphosed into kaleidoscopic brilliance mirroring the chameleon's skin. An evolution occurred—a journey that saw creativity bloom and inspiration transform.
